Succotash Southern and Creole Kitchen.: Reviews & Ratings
Food was great! Red beans and rice needed more rice, so we asked for that. Catfish was fried perfectly! Not greasy or hard. It was flaky and tender. Key lime pie was one of the best I've had in the city of Durham! Service was awesome, food didn't take too long. But it can get a little noisy. It's a popular place and its one of one! I loved all the New Orleans authenticity in the restaurant. They actually sold beer that's made in Louisiana! The decor was very reminiscent of New Orleans and they make beignets ONLY ON SUNDAY for brunch. (Make a reservation) The prices were actually decent! They weren't inflated because of this "specialty" menu influenced by New Orleans. This may not seem like a big deal, but it was HUGE to me. They serve filtered water! I am Always bringing my own water because the city water doesn't have the best taste. So I really appreciated the fact that they are serving filtered water. . They also have live music in the back on specific days. Check their website. Next time I go, it'll be on a Sunday!
I recently came for the Sunday brunch and will definitely be back for dinner soon. Not to be dramatic but the food was aMaZiNg!We ordered the brisket and grits, gumbo and beingets and all were insanely good and very filling. The price was very reasonable for the amount of food you got as well. The vibes were very relaxed and the service was great. This spot is absolutely a hidden gem!
Beyond impressed. What an absolute delight of a joint. The brisket was phenomenal, no exaggeration. The jambalaya is one of the best I've ever found in the US. The potatoes were great. The little salad on the side was a treat. The humidity IPA is one of the best I've had. I am a very happy first time customer and I hope that subsequent visits live up to this first impression. We'll be back again and again and again.
I absolutely enjoy going to succotash with my lovely lady! We’ve been here over 30 times within the last few years. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming! Going to succotash for the live music and great food is one of my favorite things to do.
Wish I had tried this place sooner. Delicious southern/Louisiana inspired cuisine. Food really was delicious. Can’t wait to go back. Nothing fancy about the restaurant itself. Service was very friendly. Food though was the star.
The raves about the food at Succotash Southern and Creole Food are totally right on. The food is absolutely delicious. The red beans and rice was out of this world as was the smoked brisket empanada. The seared scallop special on orzo was also amazing with solid gumbo with seafood and sausage. They have beer and wine but no spirits. There is one star off for 2 front of house issues: 1) there is no podium so weird when you get in the front door and have no real idea where to wait (reservation was easy to make with the online form) and 2) the main dining room up front was outrageously loud. It was not only our fellow diners (swear that the ladies next to us were shouting and cackling) but one of the servers was bellowing. I could hear him across the room facing away from me. Please, please, please put some sound dampening in your restaurant or the pleasure of eating the wonderful food is totally lost! I think that it will be definitely eating from Succotash in the future but it's likely going to be pick up orders.
This was our first time eating from this establishment and we were blown away by the food. First, we ordered pick up. I appreciate them pavkaging the succotash that came with the brisket empenada separately. And same for the red beans and rice that we ordered as a side item. We ordered the fried chicken platter that came with a citrus slaw and potatoes, cucumbers and pickled onions. All of it was delicious. And the quantity was so quite generous for the sides. We also had the jambalaya. We were ambivalent about getting this but it did not disappoint. Another winner. It was "juicy" which we prefer, and chuck full of meat. Every bite included protein. The garlic bread was completely unnecessary. The fried green tomatoes lasted 2.5 seconds. Perfectly fried. Great texture, and taste. Even the dressing on the lettuce was delicious. The brisket filled empanada was another great choice. It was filled to the brim. It was served with one empanada with the same deliciously dressed lettuce and pickled onions and succotash. I absolutely loved it. We were so busy trying everything that we were too full to try the succotash. When I picked up the food, there seemed to be ample parking although the parking lot was almost full. There was a nice shaded outdoor area that seemed to be the popular choice. There was also indoor seating. The staff was friendly and courteous. Will definitely go back to eat in the outdoor area. Very casual chill spot with great food.
Hands down, Succotash is the closest restaurant you'll get to New Orleans, LA (NOLA) cooking and decor!!! Seraphine's is a close second but it is more upscale, date-night eatery. My family and I ate here on a Saturday night with no reservation. We were fortunate to get in because within 15 minutes, the place began filling up quick. We learned that you can reserve a table but it is on their website. We found parking with no issues. There is seating inside as well as outside. The decor is everything NOLA. From the beads, fleur de lis, paintings, photos, beer (Abita), potato chips, Edison lights, etc. They nailed it with NOLA vibes. Regarding the dining experience, it was everything. I was impressed from the jump that they provide filtered water, not tap. The ice was also purified using UV lighting. We usually bring our water when we dine but this was great that they default provide filtered water. Their menu has staple foods from LA with the exception of crab cakes, crawfish, or crawfish boil. Potato salad was also missing. Hopefully they can make that happen but if they do, they gotta use Blue Plate brand mayonnaise. For dinner we ordered the following: - Red beans and rice with French bread (Jasmine or basmati rice may have been used but it was good) - Catfish (Farm-raised spread filet, light breading) - Smoked brisket with smash potatoes - Fried shrimp with a spicy remoulade-style sauce - Broiled broccoli with shaved cheese and lemon - Key Lime Pie (brown sugar and graham cracker crust with the key lime custard containing bits of lime peel; definitely homemade) The food was hot, seasoned well, not too spicy, and was filling without feeling gluttonous afterwards. Well worth the money and we DEFINITELY be returning. For what it's worth, we recently went to NOLA and had some great LA cuisine. Succotash was spot on to tasting like we were back there!!! As an added bonus, we learned that live music was being played as well. There was no cover but I'd imagine you're gonna eat while there. They had a three-seater couch in the back where the band played and it was really cool. Not sure how long they've been doing music back there but from the couch, it isn't the easiest to see the band due the the tables in front. No biggie but just a note. Overall, we definitely intend to go back. They have a brunch menu and their beignets are only sold on Sundays, so we have to see what that is like. If you're looking for a solid restaurant that is not big-chain, has good flavored food, and want to support locally, COME TO SUCCOTASH!!!!
